| Lot description: UNBESTIMMTES KLEINASIEN. LAODIKEIA AM LYKOS. Augustus, 27 v. Chr. - 14 n. Chr. AE Kleinbronze ø 15mm (4,55g). Prägung unter dem Magistrat u. Arzt Zeuxis Philalethes. Vs.: ΣΕΒΑΣΤΟΣ, Kopf des Augustus n. r. Rs.: ΖΕΥΞΙΣ / ΦΙΛΑΛΗΘΗΣ / ΛΑΟΔΙΚΕΩΝ, dazwischen Schlangenstab. RPC I, 2895; SNG von Aulock 3837; SNG Cop 554. Schwarze Patina, vz Sammlung Peter Weiß, Kiel, erworben zwischen 1967 und 2015. Bei dem auf der Rückseite der Münze genannten Zeuxis Philalethes könnte es sich um den bei Strabon (Geographie, 12,8, 20 [580c]) erwähnten berühmten Arzt handeln, der im frühen 1. Jh. n. Chr. eine Ärzteschule im Tempel des Men Karou bei Laodikeia eingerichtet hatte. Diese Vermutung wird durch die Darstellung des Schlangenstabes bekräftigt. Zeuxis Philalethes (the 'Truth-lover'), could be the famous physician, founder of the Asian branch of the 'school' of Herophilus, who is mentioned by Strabo (Geography 12. 8. 20 [580c]). He established a medical 'school' at the temple of Men Karou between Laodicea and Carura. Estimate: 150 EUR |  |
